Owen “The Tiger” Sanders has been racing since he was four years old and has not stopped since. He is a triathlete, trail runner, obstacle course racer, and is in his sixth year on Warrior Cross Country. Since joining the school’s cross country team, he has continued his passion and leads as one of the captains with the hope of building up his teammates. Owen said the team is an uplifting, fun environment that has grown close together. Some of Owen´s most memorable runs have been in Lake Tahoe, California, and in Dubai where he was surrounded by mountains and nature. He said it takes him 5 minutes and 39 seconds to run up the east side of pinnacle. Outside of school, Owen competes in triathlons that include swimming, biking, and running. He spends around 23-24 hours a week training and has recently been working with an Olympic triathlon coach. Owen said he has been inspired by many pro runners and their mentalities, as well as his coaches, and most importantly his dad. When Owen was younger his dad competed in the olympics for Team USA. His father has motivated and encouraged him to always have ¨the eye of the tiger and embody the tiger persona.¨ This saying stuck with him as a reminder to work hard to get the best out of himself. ¨My goal is to join the Olympic Development Team right out of high school,” he said. In the meantime, Owen plans to continue pushing himself in and out of practice. He said he looks forward to November when he will have the opportunity to attend a recruitment visit and train with the Olympic Development Team.
