“Our Town,” the high school fall production, is being performed in Warrior Hall October 20-24. Tryouts for the play were held at the beginning of the school year, and rehearsals started shortly after. “Our Town” is an eye-opening play that shows how many go through life without truly appreciating what it has to offer until it is too late. Written almost 100 years ago, “Our Town” is still very applicable today. “The play is a classic that is needed more today than it was back then,” Co-Director Abby Curry said. “It is literally the whole ministry of Jesus. He would see people that needed help and was aware of the immediate needs of the people,” she said. “That is what this play is all about.”
“Our Town” is unique because it is a classic play rather than a musical, unlike many school productions, but it is also unique because there is no set and very few props. The people working behind the scenes said it is still as hectic backstage, but the lack of set and props makes the flow much smoother. Some may wonder how the audience is supposed to stay entertained if there is no set. “The acting and the storyline alone are enough to keep everyone entertained,” Mrs. Curry said. The simplicity of the play is purposeful in drawing focus to the essential theme of “Our Town.” The cast and producers originally had a wrench thrown in their plans when they faced a shortage of male actors. However, the cast was able to recruit additional male friends and students to help fill in those roles.
